A Word from Pastor Stephen – May 8, 2020

The effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever.” (Isaiah 32:17 NRSV)

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful thing right now to experience quietness and trust? When you turn on the news to try and make sense of what is going on you are bombarded with opinions and advice from all sides. Everyone seems to be shouting in anger. You really wonder who you can trust. So much uncertainty is swirling all around right now.

Unfortunately, we are all flawed human beings. If you put two of us together, we will find something to disagree about with each other. Too many people operate out of a state of selfishness, scarcity, and general state of simply not trusting anyone or anything. This creates a world where everything is boiled down to winners and losers.

The word righteousness means to live right and be morally upright. It means to do the right thing for other people. It means you follow the right path. For Isaiah, the effect of being righteous is to bring peace to our life.

As Christians, peace is surrendering to Jesus and obeying what He wants us to do. Jesus said, “If you love me, keep my commands.”(John 14:15). I think it really is true. If we give up control of our lives to Jesus and follow with an open heart we really can have that quietness and trust forever. This peace will then radiate out from us into a world that desperately needs more peace and quietness and trust. Amen.
