A Word from Pastor Stephen – May 20, 2020
Be
good to your servant while I live, that I may obey your
word.
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your
law.
I am a stranger on earth; do not hide your
commands from me.
My soul is consumed with
longing for your laws at
all times. (Psalm 119:17-20 NIV)
How often do you open your Bible and read it? Once a day? Once a week? Never? Unfortunately, even for many church people, the only scripture they ever hear is what is read to them from the pulpit each week during the Sunday worship service. I hope this doesn’t describe you.
In this Psalm, David is yearning to know more about God’s word and God’s law. David wants God to open his eyes and not hide his commands from him. You can feel the urgency of David in the last verse, “My soul is consumed with longing for your laws at all times.” David lived and breathed for the Word of God.
When you do read the Bible what do you expect to find? If you are like David, you expect to find “wonderful things”. Do you read the Bible with that kind of anticipation? I hope you never let a single day go by without reading at least one verse of scripture. When one verse becomes a habit, then hopefully it becomes two, three and four verses. Then suddenly you will find yourself reading a chapter or more each day. Open your Bible expecting to find amazing and wonderful things. See what God is trying to show you and tell you. You might be surprised. Amen.
