A Word from Pastor Stephen – June 2, 2020
For you are great and do wondrous things;
You alone are God.
Teach me your ways, O LORD,
that I may walk in your truth;
unite my heart to fear your name.
I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart,
and I will glorify your name forever.
We can place our hope and faith in many things. If I just have enough money in the bank, then I’ll feel secure and I can finally relax. If that special person will just love me, I will be happy and content. If I just get that promotion, I’ll have the status and recognition I deserve. We all put our ultimate trust in something. Our passage today reminds us not to be place our ultimate hope and trust in the wrong thing.
David is asking God to help him find that firm foundation. He wants God to “unite my heart to fear your name.” I think David is asking God to take all of his scattered loyalties and devotions and strip them away so that the only thing left is his love for God. Fear in this context is not being scared and frightened. Fear means to have a sense of awe and wonder and amazement at the goodness and greatness of God.
Do you have a divided heart today? Are your allegiances scattered all over the place right now. Do you find yourself wandering from idol to idol hoping to find that elusive peace you so desperately want in your life? Pray with David for a united heart so that you can walk in the truth. Rest in the assurance that God can do “wondrous things.” Then we can sing with David “I give thanks to you, O Lord my God, with my whole heart, and I will glorify your name forever.” Amen.
