A Word from Pastor Stephen – April 28, 2020
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” (John 16:33 NIV)
“In this world you will have trouble.” Can’t we all relate to that statement right now? This is actually Jesus speaking to his disciples. If Jesus is telling his closest friends to expect trouble, then what hope do we have in this world?
In this passage Jesus is preparing his disciples for what is to come. They will be put out of the synagogue (v.2). Anyone who kills you will think they are offering a service to God (v.2). A time is coming when you will be scattered (v.32). They will grieve and mourn, but that grief will turn to joy (v.20).
The troubles facing you today may be financial, a health concern, a family issue, a broken relationship, lost employment or a myriad of other dilemmas. Your troubles may also be a dried up prayer life or a spiritual life that has crashed on the rocks. No matter what you are going through right now may you never lose the hope we have in Jesus.
In spite of all the troubles, what does Jesus tell us? “Take heart! I have overcome the world.” There is no trouble, hardship, challenge, hurt or pain that God will not overcome. Take heart! In the end, when everything is said and done, everything will be ok. Love wins in the end. God will overcome and prevail. Take that good news to heart and keep following a risen Savior. Amen.
